Differences between Ground Ball Screws and Cold-Rolled Ball Screws

There are two types of ball screws: ground ball screws and rolled ball screws. For ground ball screws, the raceways are first shaped using a turning tool, and then ground to the required dimensions and precision using a grinding machine. As for cold-rolled ball screws, they are formed by extrusion during cold rolling, and the manufacturing process is completed by simply processing both ends of the ball screws.

The processing difficulty of cold-rolled ball screws lies in the large allowance at the bearing seat part and the high hardness after heat treatment. Traditional processes usually involve annealing first and then turning, or using grinding technology. The overall processing efficiency is low, and the annealed ball screws have many problems such as deformation and cracking, which have a great impact on the grinding or turning processes.

The processing difficulty of ground ball screws is in thread cutting. After heat treatment, the hardness of ground ball screws reaches HRC58-62. Traditional processes generally use grinding to form threads, but the grinding efficiency is low and the scrap rate is high, which affects the overall production schedule.
