Relationship between Preload and Ball Screw Selection​

When ordering a ball screw, the required preload can be informed to the manufacturer based on the force conditions of the CNC ball screw, so that the manufacturer can apply the preload according to the given value. If the preload is properly selected, the linear ball screw kit can operate in an optimal state. An increase in preload will enhance the contact stiffness between the balls and the raceways, and also improve the transmission accuracy. However, an excessively large preload will lead to an increase in contact stress between the balls and the raceways, thereby reducing the service life and transmission efficiency.​

The magnitude of the preload for the high-precision ball screw should be such that there is no axial clearance in the screw-nut assembly when it is subjected to the maximum axial working load. It is required that the preload value should be greater than one-third of the maximum axial working load. Since the double-nut mechanism will cause an additional friction torque after preloading, the issues of efficiency and service life must also be taken into consideration.
