What are the different types of ball screws?

Ball Circulation Methods:

1. External circulation: The balls return to the starting point through a conduit or groove outside the nut to form a cycle. This method has a simple structure and low cost, but it is relatively large and is suitable for occasions where space requirements are not high.

2. Internal circulation: The balls change direction directly through a reverser inside the nut to achieve circulation. Each loop of the linear motion ball screw requires a reverser to complete the path of the balls, and multiple independent loops can be designed. This method has a compact structure and runs smoothly, making it suitable for high-precision and high-speed motion occasions, but the manufacturing process is more complex.

3. End cap circulation: The balls are guided back through end caps installed at both ends of the nut, which is a simple form of internal circulation. It has a simple structure but a long ball return path. This design is particularly suitable for applications with high-lead ball screws because it can withstand the force generated by fast-moving balls.

Manufacturing Methods:

1. Ground ball screws

Ground ball screws are produced through a grinding process. In this method, the blank shaft is placed horizontally, and then a very hard grinding tool is used to cut grooves. Compared with rolling ball screws, the groove surface produced by this process is smoother and has high precision, but it is more expensive and the production speed is slower.

2. Rolled Ball Screws

Rolled ball screws are manufactured through cold working deformation. The uncut blank shaft is passed through a rotating tool die to form grooves. This process causes significant plastic deformation in the blank, resulting in a high-strength ball screw. Although this method is more economical and simpler to manufacture compared with precision ground ball screws, the surface it processes is rougher. Due to increased friction, the efficiency and wear resistance of the ball screw assembly are also reduced.
