What is the "critical speed" of a ball screw?

The "critical speed" of a ball screw and nut refers to the rotational speed at which the ball screw is prone to catastrophic failure due to excessive deflection and vibration. Operating a ball screw pair beyond its critical speed leads to significant precision degradation of the entire machine due to severe vibrations. It is recommended to run all ball screws at 80% or lower of their critical speed. The critical speed can be enhanced by optimizing support configurations—for example, using ball screw support units with angular contact paired bearings at both ends. The selection of support bearings also plays a crucial role in improving the critical speed threshold.
